Time to introduce the T.R.U.M.P act/ammendment

T.R.U.M.P act/amendment:

Together Restricting Unchecked Munitions at Protests

- Bans possession of firearms at protests or other public gatherings

Or if you want to go further, also include

- Bans possession of firearms in any area where law enforcement is operating (which could be almost any public space)

Promote this by thanking the president for his leadership on this issue. This is to protect the agents of ICE and other law enforcement, as well as the public who are endangered by these guns.

If it passes, we get some real gun control. In any case, we force the republicans to either defy thier leader or reverse course on long held policy positions. Hopefully driving a wedge in their coalition at the same time.

How Can We Fix This Together? (Tariffs, Manufacturing, and a Solution)

For those not aware, the board game industry has been hit especially hard by Trump's tariffs. Some companies have already had to shut down, while others have products stuck in China that they can no longer afford to import.

Stonemaier Games is a small company that is suing the administration over the tariffs. Their latest blog post does a great job of explaining the effects of the tariffs and their lawsuit, presents a more reasonable strategy to produce the desired effects, and answers frequent questions/comments.

Many publishers began production before the tariffs were implemented, and most of them can’t afford to pay 145% tariffs to bring those products into the US from China (a $14.50 tax on every $10 spent to make the products). The 75 companies that responded to my survey are collectively facing over $13 million in tariff taxes for products they invested in before the tariffs even existed.

I agree that more US manufacturing and less reliance on companies in other countries to make the things Americans use, sell, and consume are admirable goals, but I don’t believe the tariffs (and how they were implemented) will accomplish those goals. So how do we fix this together?

A truly viable first step would be to handle box printing and final game assembly in the US (following component production in China). It would require 2-piece box prices here greatly reduce (perhaps subsidized by the government), but this first step could lead to all printed components being made in the US while factories in China could focus on specialty components like screen-printed meeples, custom dice for a game, and miniatures. That is the global economy at its best–we’re working with each other, not against each other.

For nearly 50 years since its enactment, no president until now has relied on IEEPA to impose tariffs. The Constitution gives Congress—not the president—the power to impose tariffs because policies affecting an entire nation should come from the body most representative of the entire nation. And Congress cannot delegate that core legislative power to the president.

By the way, if you are not familiar with them, this company makes excellent games. Anyone that is even a casual birder would probably enjoy Wingspan, which was designed by Elizabeth Hargrave. Their are also offshoots with similar mechanics involving fish and dragons. Check them out!

The Nazis' original plan was for mass deportation

This isn't talked about much, but the Nazis' original plan was the mass deportation of Jews to Madagascar, before eventually settling on the Final Solution: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madagascar_Plan

Rademacher recommended on 3 June 1940 that Madagascar should be made available as a destination for the Jews of Europe. With Adolf Hitler's approval, Adolf Eichmann released a memorandum on 15 August 1940 calling for the resettlement of a million Jews per year for four years, with the island being governed as a police state under the SS.

Republicans may not like being compared to Nazis, but it sure seems like they are following in their footsteps. And as history demonstrates, it is possible to go from "Let's round these people up and move them" to "Let's round these people up and shoot them" frighteningly quickly.

"Refugees" by Brian Bilston

Lately I've been thinking a lot about the issue of immigration. Polling indicates this is one of the most important issues this cycle, and one that is seen as "good" for Trump and "bad" for Biden/Harris.

The Republicans like to play up issues like terrorism or drug smuggling, and claim they are all for "legal" immigration, but recent incidents have really just exposed them as bigots. They just don't want more people of color coming into the country.

Unfortunately, they've also done a good job erasing a lot of the nuance of this issue conflating asylum seekers with "illegal immigrants".

I was watching a video this morning about the treatment of POWs and refugees at the end of World War 2, and they shared this poem, "Refugees" by Brian Bilston. I had never seen it before, but I really, really like it.

I'll just share the link directly to the author's page: https://brianbilston.com/2016/03/23/refugees/

I would encourage everyone to read it. It is short, though you will read it twice

Roaming History - plug for a YouTube channel

A while back I discovered a fairly small YouTube channel called Roaming History. Currently has a little under 3K subscribers and just a few videos. All of their videos so far have been focused on the civil rights movement.

What makes these videos interesting is that they show you exactly where things happened and provide a lot of extra details. I've been learning a lot from them.

I thought I'd share it, as I figure others here might be interested. I would love to see their subscribers and views really take off. Be sure to give them some likes and comments if you can. History content is having a tough time on YouTube lately. Their latest video from a few days ago is on the sit-in protests:

Man who killed 2 outside Iowa church faced harassment case

Man who killed 2 outside Iowa church faced harassment case

A man who fatally shot two women before killing himself in the parking lot of an Iowa church had been romantically involved with one of the women and faced a court hearing next week on a charge of harassing her, investigators said Friday.

Whitlatch — who had a long history with law enforcement involving women — was arrested May 31 on counts of harassment and impersonating a police officer.

A search of Whitlatch’s truck following the shooting turned up ammunition and a receipt showing he bought the ammunition an hour before the shooting, Fitzgerald said. A search warrant executed at Whitlatch’s home also turned up an AR-15-style rifle, which was not used in the shooting.

I know this wasn't a "mass" shooting, but we really can't do anything about this? If you get arrested for assault, harassment, stalking, etc, you should go on a list that prevents you from buying guns or ammo. And a condition of the release should be that the police confiscate all your registered guns and search for any that aren't, and if they find any, back to jail you go. If you try to buy guns or ammo, back to jail you go. Conviction of these types of crimes or other violent crimes gets you barred from gun ownership for life.
